FFA Unearths History
Amanda Schad, reporter, CAFNR Corner Post

Sept. 2, 2003--As many University of Missouri-Columbia students started back to class on Monday, they may have noticed some activity on Sanborn Field. Found under ten feet of soil, workers unearthed a time capsule that has special meaning to members of the Missouri FFA Association.

" The time capsule was buried 25 years ago for the FFA members of today,” explains State FFA Area VI Vice-President Sara Muri. “By digging it up we will learn about FFA's history in Missouri and realize how Missouri FFA became what it is today.”

Chartered in 1929, Missouri FFA has enjoyed 75 years of change and growth.

“ There are a lot more students involved today than when I was in FFA. They have more diversified interests and complete more specialized SAE projects,” said Willard Haley.

Haley, now an agriculture instructor at Eldon, was a member of the State Officer team that added items to the time capsule. Although no one will know what is in the capsule until the ceremony on September 9th, Haley reveals that one of the things he put in was a letter to the state officers and today’s FFA members.

Sara Muri is excited about seeing the contents of the time capsule and reading letters like Haley’s. “I think the time capsule will make people remember what FFA stands for and hopefully give today's FFA members pride in their organization,” she said.
