Second
Hand Lions Proves to be a Must See
Linda Veatch, Corner Post Staff
I agreed to go see a movie with friends, having no idea what I was going to see.
What I saw was incredible. This movie, Second Hand Lions, was not only happy
and sad, touching and fascinating, but it made the audience feel the happiness
and joy of the characters.
Two Academy Award winning actors star in this film, Robert Duvall and Michael
Caine, along with Academy Award Nominee and child star, Haley Joel Osment. Tim
McCanlies wrote and directed the film.
The story was about a boy who was tossed into living with his crazy old uncles.
In time, he gradually grows to love and learn from his uncles, as well as they
begin to learn from him. This is the story of their lives and how they came to
love each other.
The title comes into play because the uncles buy a used lion from a circus so
that they can shoot it and mount it in their living room. The lion is sick and
the uncles can not bring themselves to kill it. The boy befriends the animal
and takes care of it. In the end, the boy and the lion are connected because
they are both second hand and they both evolve into who they truly are from this
relationship.
The sad parts of the story are actually happy moments for the audience as well
as the characters. That is what is unique about this movie. It goes through the
boy's life and terrible things happen to him, but the audience feels good about
these changes these challenges bring about.
"I think this movie brought back the simple, sweet, style for movie goers," said
Emily Chuckovich, journalism. "It is not something you normally see these days.
It isn't like the rest of the movies out today like the Underworld/Scary Movies
era. This was a good movie for everyone. You don't have to be a sci-fi watcher
or into pure comedy, this film fits a category of its own for everyone."
This is a great movie and I would recommend, as well as encourage, everyone to
see it. It has the great adventure, comedy, and love aspects of all great movies.
The casting is outstanding and it is truly a must-see film.
