November 1st 2003- The Blue Note was filled with a sparse crowd
as the Missouri Sex Offenders took the stage at eight p.m. Some
concert-goers were annoyed with
the admittedly amateur approach that the Sex-Offenders took to the stage with
them, "from house-parties to the Blue Note," as one band member said.
But after the Sex Offenders, the crowd would've been happier to drink
from the Halloween punch mixed by Jim Jones himself rather than listen
to the second opening
act. I Love You, But I'm Not in Love with Yous was lacking to say the least.
Their anti-climactic combination of three guitars, a keyboard and a drummer went
together like peanut butter and broken glass; not to mention a lead singer whose
yells sounded like squirrels were attacking his nether regions. "I've never so
much wished to be drunk in all my life," said one concertgoer. Another cited
Kurt Cobain in saying, "I hate myself and want to die." Then continued saying, "This
is why drugs are bad." For their final song the head Neanderthal invited the
crowd up on stage, this lasted for less than thirty seconds before the bouncers
realized that this was a craptacular local band and they didn't have any business
inviting anyone up on stage.
Next up was the costume contest whose contestants were too numerous to mention,
although some highlights were Hunter S. Thompson, The Hulk and Sean Michaels.
The winners were Macho Man Randy Savage (3rd Place), some guy with a beard, a
2x4 and an American flag (2nd Place), and Larry Byrd (1st Place).
And at long last, just before 11 o'clock, Andrew W. K. took the stage.
With his unique brand of synthesized metal showing roots in 80's hair
bands (i.e."Twisted
Sister," "Motely Crue," "Poison,") the music that has been called 'the gospel
of party' did it's job and had everyone in the Blue Note moshing, jumping, and
screaming to their heart's content. "Andrew W. K.'s music… you listen to it a
few times and it grows on you like a fungus." Said one concert-goer who called
it a "great concert."
His charisma and good nature showed through when he dedicated "She is So Beautiful," to
an otherwise anonymous Abby for her birthday. The group went with the Halloween
theme not in their dress so much as in breaking a pirate-shaped piñata, and changing
the lyrics of "I Love New York City," to "I Love Halloween,"… "which didn't particularly
matter because his lyrics are incomprehensible anyway." Said one concert-goer.
The rest of the concert bred lots of moshing, consistent stage dives from audience
members who had the guts, and one jump from a speaker stand. Even Mr. W.K. got
in on the action with a flip into the crowd.
As the concert wore down and finished up, police were brought in to contain the
adrenaline-charged crowd, which as far as metal concerts go is a good sign. Thank
you Mr. W.K. may we see you again sometime?
