Mixed Feelings on Skit Night
Amanda Schad, Corner Post Reporter

Sept. 23, 2003-Monday night, students who had lined up around the block made their way in to be part of the annual Ag Week Skit Night, which boasted a new feature-Buy a Tiger by the Tail Date/Labor Auction.

At 7 p.m., Master of Ceremonies Ben Marshall took the stage and recognized the skit judges: Steve Taylor, Darla Eggers, Dr. Payne, Dick Marshall, and Bill and Shermain Riggins. Kurt Richter, Dana Brown, and Dr. Vaughan were among other notables recognized from the audience.

Eleven organizations from the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources each performed a skit for the entertainment of the crowd. There was “No Limit” to the range of material used. Everything was fair game, from the Ricky Clements scandal to the Beverly Hillbillies. Many were spoofs on the newly popular reality shows and several contained age-old stereotypes of members of certain CAFNR organizations.

The skit schedule was punctuated by breaks for door prize drawings and the new date/labor auction. Senior Mike Deering showed off his auctioneering talents as he sold members of the Ag Week Steering Committee to the highest bidder.

The night culminated in a bidding war between Alpha Gamma Rho and the Independent Aggies to purchase four female members of the Steering Committee.

The total money raised from the date/labor auction was $672. The money will be used next year to help fund the 100th Barnwarming.

The evening ended with a reminder to drive safely and students left the Blue Note comparing notes on the evening’s activities.

Many people thoroughly enjoyed their peers’ performances. “The GDI skit was the best. It was the most funny and most creative,” said Amy Dunlap, sophomore in Ag Journalism. Freshman Dallas St. Clair nodded his head in agreement.

Others weren’t as thrilled with the entertainment. “I’m so disappointed. I mean, there were some great skits, but none of them were really outstanding,” said Ag Journalism major Sara Muri.

Regardless, MC Ben Marshall was pumped about the evening. “Skit Night 2003 at the Blue Note was amazing…We appreciate what all the clubs and organizations do and hope to see them at other events.”
