September 25, 2003 – Mizzou students and faculty had the opportunity to show off their cooking and grilling skills in the annual Great Grill-Off event sponsored by the Collegiate Cattlewomen. This is the second year for the Great Grill-Off. The event took place on Sunday, September 21 in the ASRC parking lot. Teams could have a maximum number of 4 people and their entrée had to be 100% beef. The meat could be marinated prior to the event but not pre-cooked in any way. Teams began entering at 11:00 and judging began around noon.

There were 3 divisions that teams could compete in. Placing first in the student division was “The Moo Crew.” Kevin McAllster and Andrea Loyd were the competitors for this team. They prepared “simple Italian steak” for the judges. The “Mizzou Cooking Crew”, Jill Nelson and Rachel McGilvray, placed second in the student division with “Mizzou Cooking Crew Sizzling Sirloin.” Placing third in this division were the “AGR Beef Hunks.” Members of this team included Matt Hill, Josh Phillips, Seth Swindler and Ben Thompson. They prepared “Beef Medallions seasoned with Santa Maria sauce.” The “Mizzou Cooking Crew” took the showmanship award for the student division. Team member Rachel McGilvray said “It was a great experience, it was a lot of fun and we hope to compete again next year.”

In the celebrity/non student division, first place went to “Bad Intentions”, Christina Downing, Mattie Adams, and Brandy Chase, with “Barbeque Meatballs.” Placing second was the “Tiger Paw Rub Raw BBQ.” Team members included Gary Adams, Jason Adams and Patrick Davis and they prepared “Barbeque Beef Kabobs.” Third place went to “Beauty and the Beast”, Tom and Alice Payne, with “Tom’s BBQ.” “Bad Intentions” took the showmanship award in this category.

The judges for the Great Grill-Off were Matthew Brandt, Leslie Jett, Dr, Carol Lorenzen and Chad Stahl. The Collegiate Cattlewomen decided to host this event for the second year to become more involved in Ag Week and to promote beef consumption among their peers. They also thought that it would be a fun way for students and members of the community to show off their grilling skills in a fun atmosphere.
